Unnatural Persons: The Company in Historical and Social Context

This seminar covers a range of theoretical models of the business corporation, explores the rise of the modern company in the U.S. and Japan, and introduces several normative perspectives on social role of the company. The syllabus for the course is available here.

Japanese Management: A View from the Early 21st Century
Doing Business in Asia 2008 Program, Williams College of Business, Xavier University, Summer 2008

Lectured on Japan’s postwar economic development and distinguishing characteristics of Japanese business and management practices. Commented on the importance of long-term employment, enterprise unions, deep supplier relationships, consensus-oriented decision-making processes, and stable shareholders. For those interested in Japanese Management, I recommend 21st-Century Japanese Management by James C. Abegglen and Japan Remodeled by Steven K. Vogel.
